This collage was created in the first few months of the global pandemic. It documents my feelings about a bleak future ahead. While nature seems to be thriving, humanity is experiencing very dark times. Based on historic modeling we seemed to be repeating the habits of the previous 1918 Spanish Flu.

Inspiration for these drawings evolved from the isolation of the pandemic. Exploring parks in the Hudson Valley allowed me to appreciate nature and architecture on a new level. I was able to escape into a quiet and tranquil world. My imagination exploded (see collaged details).

The last time Barry and I were roommates was in Brooklyn at Pratt Institute during the Vietnam war. Fifty years later we're roommates again in Vietnam. He sits on the balcony drawing the breathtaking views of Sapa while I'm at a desk inside our hotel room working on this collage.

Each day I would collect memorabilia - tickets, currency, postcards, pamphlets, etc., whatever would catch my eye. Later I would create another small collage with a handwritten note to recall a specific moment for the day.

These portraits reveal a woman’s loss of soul in contemporary society. It pushes the boundaries of abstraction to present a visual dilemma: when does the woman disappear and the emptiness begin? The collage comprises torn paintings, random tapestries, printed books, and painted backgrounds.

In every country, people get into arguments, hold racist views or suffer from mental health issues. But in the U.S., it is easier for those people to pick up a gun and shoot someone. The numbers tell the story. Just look at 18 countries that had the most mass killings from 1998-2019 in the developed world. The U.S. had the most, 101. France came in second, 8. United Kingdom came in last with 1. It all comes down to the same problem: More guns equal more gun deaths. We need to ask ourselves what are our priorities.
